What can you learn from the organisation who raised $150m for psychedelic research?
'The cultural integration of psychedelics won't happen overnight, and the question of young people is perhaps the most difficult involved. The first step is for people who have knowledge of these substances to share it, “coming out” about their own experiences. Drug education should be honest and present a balanced picture of risks and benefits' ~ Rick Doblin
Last month, we had the pleasure of diving into the Interdisciplinary Conference on Psychedelic Research, where one of the standout moments was witnessing Rick Doblin's passionate presentation.
Rick has been a pivotal changemaker in the psychedelic industry. He is the founder and executive director of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), which is a non-profit organisation dedicated to researching and legalising psychedelic substances for therapeutic use. He has overseen remarkable progress. Since its inception in 1986, MAPS has raised over $150 million, funding ongoing research that pushes boundaries in mental health treatment. How can we foster this movement in our everyday lives?
Prioritise Personal Well-being and Growth
Invest in yourself. Cultivate habits that nurture your mental health and promote personal growth. Whether it's through mindfulness exercises, seeking therapy, or adopting self-care routines, prioritise resilience and emotional well-being in your daily life.
Embrace Education and Awareness
Explore the latest research and potential benefits of alternative therapies from credible sources. Arm yourself with knowledge to debunk myths and engage in informed conversations with peers and professionals.
Champion Advocacy and Policy Engagement
Join the conversation on evidence-based drug policies. Whether it's writing to policymakers, participating in community forums, or supporting organisations dedicated to responsible drug policy reform, your voice matters in shaping a compassionate approach to mental health care.
Navigate with Ethical Integrity
Mirror MAPS' commitment to ethical standards in personal and professional decisions. Prioritise safety, consent, and societal impact in everything you do. Be a beacon of integrity in your actions and choices.
Foster Multidisciplinary Collaboration
Break down silos and embrace diverse perspectives. Collaborate across disciplines to spark innovation and tackle complex challenges in your own endeavours. Seek out opportunities to integrate fresh viewpoints into your decision-making processes.
A final word
By pioneering rigorous scientific studies and advocating for evidence-based policies, MAPS has not only advanced our understanding of psychedelic-assisted therapies but also challenged societal stigma surrounding these substances.
As we reflect on MAPS' journey, it prompts us to reconsider how we approach mental health and wellness. Their efforts encourage a shift towards compassionate, evidence-based treatments and policies that prioritize human well-being. By supporting MAPS and engaging in informed discussions, each of us has a role to play in shaping a future where psychedelic therapies can offer hope and healing to those in need.
